Mud, Glorious Mud!
The drizzly conditions didn’t seem to dampen the festive spirits of Tadley Runners, as they donned Santa hats to help out at their 26th annual Christmas Cross Country Race (or was it to shield them from the pre-race rain?) Nor were the 164 competitors put off by the “extremely muddy” reputation of the new course which was introduced last year. Recent downpours ensured that the course didn’t disappoint on that front! During the 5.2 mile course the runners experienced a wide variety of terrain – woodland paths, very boggy water meadows, fields, hills, a stream and a very generous supply of mud! All finishers were rewarded for their efforts with the usual cup of homemade soup, and a commemorative mug.
The winner, Alex Hamilton, of local club Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC, achieved a time of 32.05 (only 31 seconds slower than the course record set last year), followed by James Voaden, unattached, who finished in 35.33. Hot on James’ heels was William Collie, unattached, who finished 10 seconds later in 35.43.
Nick Onslow, of Bramley Trail Runners, performed an impressive sprint finish to win the M40 age category prize with a time of 36.08. Peter Hardman of Datchet Dashers won the M50 prize in 39.48, and the M60 prize was snapped up again by Richard Shaw, unattached, with an impressive 40.58. Richard’s time was nearly 4 minutes quicker than last year!
The ladies race was won by another Basingstoke & Mid Hants AC runner, Rhiannon Perrymen with a brilliant time of 39.45, followed by fellow club runner Mitch Lloyd (40.11). Amelie Hunton of Ranleigh Harriers crossed the line in third place achieving a time of 41.19. The ladies’ age-graded prizes went to Christina Gustafson of Tri20 for the F35 category (44.55), Caroline Bamford of Hungerford Hares for F45 (46.49) and Sally Waterman, unattached, won the F55 category with a time of 50.47. Sally also won this prize last year, and has managed to improve her time from last year by over a minute, no mean feat in those muddy conditions.
The Team prize went to Basingstoke & Mid Hants AC, represented by Alex Hamilton, Marc Soane and Rhiannon Perrymen.
Tadley Runners are a small, friendly local running club. Their next race is the popular Tadley Summer 10k race and Kids Fun Run held in July. For more information about the club, visit www.tadleyrunners.co.uk.

A group of 48 local people recently took part in a running club trip to Barcelona, 29 runners and 19 supporters. Of the 29 Tadley Runners who completed the Barcelona marathon, sponsored by Zurich Insurance, 9 were tackling the 26.2 mile distance for the very first time. Other members are experienced marathon runners, having now clocked up a total of more than 180 between them.
On the day before the marathon, the race organisers laid on a very special breakfast event for all participants, which involved running the last 4 km of the Olympic Marathon route in 1992, and finishing on the track in the Olympic Stadium.
Conditions were ideal on the Sunday, the day of the race, with cool air and no wind for the runners, but plenty of sunshine to bring out the supporters! 14 members of the club were rewarded for all their hard training with PBs. Special running vests were designed for the trip, which included the bright colours of the Spanish and UK flags, making them easy for their supporters to identify among the 15,000 runners. All club members wore black ribbons pinned to their vest in memory of their fellow club member Tim O’Sullivan who had done so much for Tadley Runners for 25 years, and who sadly passed away a few weeks before the trip.
The trip organisers and fellow runners Sharon Riley and Gary Shaugnessy started making plans for the trip back in March 2014. Sharon said “it started out with just a few members wanting to take part, but snowballed into nearly half the club signing up for it”
Tadley Runners welcomed nearly 200 runners to their annual 5.2 mile Christmas Cross Country Race. The club launched a brand new, completely off-road course for the 25th anniversary of this cross country, and all finishers were treated to a special T-shirt to commemorate this milestone, and the usual cup of home made soup! The 186 finishers experienced a wide variety of terrain – woodland paths, water meadows, fields, hills, a stream and a very generous supply of mud! Despite the earlier showers, the whole duration of the race enjoyed bright and sunny conditions.
The winner, Frederick Slemeck, of Hercules Wimbledon, has set a very impressive initial course record to challenge future runners of this race. Frederick finished in 31m 34s, followed by Ian Gosling of Reading Roadrunners in 34m 18s. In third place was Nicholas Liu of Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC, who achieved a time of 35m 21s. The men’s age-graded prizes went to Richard Usher of Reading Roadrunners for the M40 category (36m 05s), Mark Bevan of Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC for M50 (38m 21s), and the M60 prize went to Richard Shaw, unattached (44m 51s).
The ladies race was won by Ellie Gosling of Reading Roadrunners with a brilliant time of 38m 52s, closely followed by Kate Robson of Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC (39m 03s). Katie Henderson of Tri20 crossed the line in third place achieving a time of 40m 28s. The ladies’ age-graded prizes went to Belinda Tull of Reading Roadrunners for the F35 category (42m 52s), Anne Leggett, unattached for F45 (46m 42s) and Sally Waterman, unattached, won the F55 category with a time of 52m 08s.
The Team prize went to Reading Roadrunners, represented by Ian Gosling, Ellie Gosling and Richard Usher (36m 05s).
